IQPAK®:
The all-rounder in application

IQPAK® offers maximum shape flexibility and is designed for a wide range of applications in the food and non-food sectors. IQPAK® is suitable for large-scale production and scores with its excellent Life cycle assessment (LCA) and Digital Product Passport (DPP). IQPAK® makes the circular economy possible on an industrial scale.

Which products is IQPAK® suitable for?

  • for most of the products up to 1 liter in volume, whether solid, liquid, hot, cold or loose
  • for dairy products such as milk, yoghurt, quark, desserts or ice cream
  • for beverages that were previously filled in conventional composite beverage cartons (e.g. juices)
  • for drinks that are currently filled in disposable or washable reusable cups (coffee to go, beer, long drinks and soft drinks at events, etc.)
  • for burgers and bowls in the to-go area for chemical and cosmetic products
  • for many other products in the food wholesale sector

“We see great potential for IQPAK® in dairy products in particular, but also in non-food items.”

Dr. Christian Beinert, Leiter Abteilung Kunststoffverarbeitung und Bauteilauslegung am Fraunhofer-Institut LBF

Which advantages does IQPAK®
offer for users?

The material costs are manageable. The material (mainly polypropylene) is purchased for the production of the required container pool sizes. The material then remains in the closed IQPAK® material cycle. Only for use in the food sector is new PP granulate required in the short term for the content layers that come into contact with the contents. In the medium term, IQPAK® is also aiming to use recycled polypropylene (rPP) for the content layer.

A near-field communication chip (NFC chip) is permanently installed at the bottom of the IQPAK® system layer (returnable component). The chip gives bottlers, logistics, retailers, consumers and refurbishment centers access to information stored in the system’s own IQPAK® database. This allows the material cycle to be managed efficiently, the environmental Life-cycle-assessment  to be optimized and the consumer experience to be enhanced. IQPAK® packaging is ready for the Digital Product Passport (DPP-ready) thanks to the integrated NFC chip. The DPP is required by law from 2027/28 by the Ecodesign Regulation ESPR.
When it comes to data protection, IQPAK® is of course GDPR-compliant.

IQPAK® offers autonomous reverse logistics that works independently of the Dual System – which collects and disposes of packaging waste in Germany. This brings clear cost benefits for users.
With IQPAK®, users also save on the fees charged throughout Europe as part of the EPR (extended producer responsibility). The fee for the manufacturing and placing on the market of disposable plastic products (in accordance with the new Single-Use Plastic Fund Act EKFondsG), which has been levied since 01.01.2024, will also be less significant for IQPAK® than for other packaging due to the closed looped material cycle.

IQPAK® performs better in the CO2 balance than all other reusable systems currently in the market due to the low material requirements and the fact that it does not require the energy-intensive washing process.
An environmental assessment report by the Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg (ifeu) came to this conclusion:
Washing 1,000 commercially available reusable deposit cups produce around 12 kilograms of CO2e. For 1,000 comparably sized IQPAK® cups, it would only be 7.4 kilograms of CO2e if the plastic films of the handling and content layers were not recycled but thermally recovered. As soon as all three layers are made from recycled PP (rPP), 1,000 IQPAK® cups have a cradle-to-grave value of just 3.14 kg CO2e. This means a 56% reduction in emissions compared to a standard reusable deposit cup that has to be washed. With 50 cycles of the system layer, IQPAK® even saves CO2 emissions of between 66% and 83%.

IQPAK® essentially works with polypropylene (PP) monomaterial for all three layers of the packaging, depending on the filling material. The system layer is injection-molded from PP. The handling layer is made of oriented PP (O-PP) or thermoformable PP. The content layer also consists of a PP monomaterial, the composition of which is adapted to the content to be filled: Different barrier properties can be assigned to the material; food suitability (food grade) is given.

Depending on the application scenario, IQPAK® provides all operational components and process steps from a single source: container production, return via the system’s own collection containers, refurbishing of the containers in IQPAK®’s own machinery, data logistics.
It is also possible for the user to take over certain interfaces or process steps in a licensing procedure.
